This is the first of a series of posts, inspired by Nicky Case’s yearly meaningful media lists (such as this one from 2019) and by Radio Ambulante’s recomendados del equipo para el fin de semana, that I’ll try to publish on a monthly basis. Each will contain a selection of the books, comics, articles, movies, videos and other media I enjoyed or found thought-provoking throughout each month.

Because this blog is chaotic and multilingual, the lists will be in plain simple chronological order and each item’s language will be the one I consumed the content in.

1. Martin Eden, un’adattamento cinematografico italiano (molto italiano!) dell’omonimo romanzo di Jack London (IT)

Brilla Luca Marinelli nei panni del protagonista, un giovane marinaio che, da completo autodidatta e grazie alla sua estrema determinazione, si fa strada come scrittore ma, una volta raggiunto il successo, si ritrova disgustato dall’ambiente borghese del quale si trova finalmente a fare parte. Per chi è in Italia o sa fingere di esserlo, pare che il film sia disponibile a tempo indeterminato su RaiPlay.

2. The last episode of the Numberphile Podcast, with Zvezdelina Stankova (EN)

I always enjoy this interview-based podcast on mathematicians, but I’m especially fond of this this episode: Zvezdelina is a charming storyteller and gives some interesting insights about the difference between the soviet and the current US school system.

3. Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot, un film di supereroi ambientato a Roma (!) con personaggi convincenti e di un certo spessore (IT)

Anche questo pare che se pò vede aggratis sul sito della Rai.

4. Gender Queer: A Memoir, an autobiographical graphic novel by wonderful Maia Kobabe (EN)

The volume is based on the author’s webcomics originally published on eir Instagram and some excerpts from the actual book are available here, but I really recommend that you read the whole thing. I Göteborg finns den på biblioteket.

5. Camila saldrá esta noche, una película argentina que mi pareja y yo vimos al Festival de Cine de Gotemburgo (ES)

La historia, especialmente interesante dado el origen sudamericano de la película, trata de una chica de 17 años con una fuerte conciencia política y feminista que empieza a asistir a un colegio católico. El enfoque es en sus vínculos familiares con hermana, madre y abuela y en sus relaciones íntimas con compañeros de ambos sexos. Nos gustaron especialmente los personajes y los actores, pero la fotografía y la música también son muy buenas.
